Kru or Ajarn are titles given to masters as a sign of respect by those who value the training they are receiving. I use that title when I am referring to the greats I trained with and learned from in Thailand, and I speak about them in those terms. They never, not once, asked anyone to label them as such. And I do not call myself by those names.
In Western culture, Kru is often adopted by those teaching in a Muay Thai school setting who have trained under a master of Muay Thai for at least 5 years and teaches/coaches yearly. The title Ajarn is a Thai language term that loosely translates to professor, or teacher. It is derived from the Pali word ācariya and is a term of respect, similar in meaning to the Japanese Sensei. However, having lived, fought, and worked in Thailand these “titles” are kind of like a Chinese buffet restaurant. They have been adapted for a Western audience.
As a person who speaks fluent Thai, has a Thai spouse and children, and has spent significant time in Thai culture, I do not feel the need to label myself Kru, or Ajarn and deeply respect authentic Muay Thai culture and traditions.
Sadly o refund policy in always in effect, barring technical difficulties.
